Periodontal Disease: Homepage_about

The team at Toluca Lake Cosmetic Dentistry wants to help you keep your smile healthy, and that includes both your teeth along with the health of your gums. Periodontal disease is characterized as a disease that attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Periodontal disease is the number one reason why people lose teeth. Research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as: stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk for the developing baby and the mother during pregnancy. During periodontal disease, your body responds by creating inflammation that can be seen as red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it!  Most people are not aware of it because periodontal disease is usually painless in the early stages.

During routine exams and at every dental cleaning appointment, the doctor and the hygienist, will evaluate the gum tissue attachment to your teeth to determine if there are any “Pockets” that many times indicate the presence of gum disease.  If there is, both providers will talk with you about the best treatment options to get your mouth back to optimal health. Depending on how advanced the disease is, this might include scaling and root planing (Deep Cleanings), antibiotics or antimicrobials directly into the “Pockets”, periodontal surgery or implants.

The good news is, we can help you get Gingivitis under control and possibly return your gums to normal health.  With Periodontal Disease, the goal will be to get the disease under control with increased maintenance cleanings.  Regular dental checkups and periodontal exams are key to keeping your gums free of infection. Good home care habits, including regular brushing and flossing, will also help reduce the plaque buildup that leads to gum disease.
